Celebrity Brand: Carla Bulgaria Roses Beauty by Carla Royo-Vilanova

In 2008 the wife of Kyril of Bulgary presented her range of cosmetics made of six products based on rose water and eco friendly. This year she added a perfume.

Toner, cleanser, moisturizer, nutritive cream, body lotion, and calming gel were the products selected for starting a new brand addressed to sensitive skins and those who look for minimizing their wrinkles. Rose water it’s a must for reactive skins since our grandmother’s era and at once rose has always been the sign of Romanticism, as Carla confesses herself a romantic to the bone. Then, don’t get surprised with names as Rain of Roses, Light of Roses, and Moon of Roses.

The roses of her brand are picked up in Bulgary, in the territory known as the Valley of Roses, to 200 km of Sofia (the capital of the country). Concerned about environment, it uses the minimum package.

There are colognes that get old-fashioned with the change of season, but this is one has become a classic. The best pick for a teenager with wild spirit, it’s also suitable for a sophisticated lady. Red alert, the girl’s coming.

In the early 90s, when I was a teenager, it was one of my favourites, as I considered it luxurious and glamorous for a ridicule price of around 8 euros of the time, so I was broken hearted when it stopped being made in Spain. But, by chance, I rediscovered in a trip to London in 2007, and still as fascinated as 15 years before, I included it in my hand luggage.

Jasmin, ylang, musk, orange flower, plum, and other ingredients come together for an unique blend, feminine and sensual. Charlie Red it’s the mysterious girl that would drive you insane without uttering a word, classy, sexy and exuberant, as models like Cindy Crawford or Cameron.

The complete range it’s made of cologne in sizes 50 ml and 100 ml and of 75 ml body spray.

Eat natural, live better

In a society that goes so fast cooking properly becomes a nightmare. Then, our health faces the results, as we eat more prefabricated products than we should. Giving an eye to our diet would bring us a more enjoyful moments.

There’s no need to read the ingredient list to notice if a product it’s loaded with additives, colourants, fats, and salt, our taste notices it fast, and our health, no long after. Babies are introduced into nutrition with purees with no salt at all but when we grow up, we seem not to get enough of it. When we are forced to return to the diet without salt, we complain. For example, studies have revealed that the corn we eat in the cinema has an insane amount of salt and other snacks –like fries and peanuts- are no further.

When choosing the most appropriate food, follow this single rule: the longer best before date, the most additives.

Increasingly we find more organic stores in which they sell food that have been not treated chemically and that have reduced amounts of salt. Trying them it’s a wise way of reducing our excesses step by step and discovering a world of new tastes, the world our grandparents lived in.

Musicotheraphy: Ten songs for not giving up

Music is one of the biggest arts but also a nice way to improve our lifes. The appropriate melody and lyrics can change your mood from insane nihilism to healthy hope. Like a true friend, music is always there when most needed. Here’s a selection of songs to stimulate the good vibes.

  1. The Ark : It Takes A Fool To Remain Sane (Album: We Are The Ark, 2000)
Trying to be as expected from you can only result in unhappiness, but to be yourself takes courage and doing things out of common. Who cares if the rest don’t like it?

  2. Alaska y Dinarama: A Quién Le Importa (Album: No es pecado, 1986)
It’s one of the most successful songs in Spanish music as it’s a hymn to self-determination. “Who cares about what I do/who cares about what I say/I’m like that/that’s the way I’ll follow/ I will never change”, rhymes. Every human being it’s unique and there’s not the right way to be.

  3. Whitney Houston: The Greatest Love Of All (Album: Whitney Houston, 1985)
The greatest love of all and the most difficult to achieve is to loving oneself, as we are our most severe judge. And it’s a good self-esteem and indulgence with our mistakes that makes the difference between happiness and misery.

  4. George Michael: Faith (Album: Faith, 1987)
“I need someone to hold me/but I’ll wait for something more”. Sometimes the desperation or the insecurity can lead to stay as we are even when we don’t like it because we are afraid of fighting for our right to happiness. If we leave a relationship, a friend, or a job we are dissatisfied with think ourselves without resources for finding a new one. But it’s just a question of time and of hard work.

  5. Gun: Taking On The World (Album: Taking On The World, 1989)
The full album it’s a reflection about the society of late 80s, but this song it’s the resume. There are sometimes that things overwhelm you and here’s an invitation for don’t let them break you and see the other side.

  6. Right Said Fred: I’m Too Sexy (Album: Up, 1992)
"I’m too sexy for my shirt too sexy for my shirt/ So sexy it hurts/ And I’m too sexy for Milan too sexy for Milan/New York and Japan”.A joke or not, this track has become a classic of the 90s and frequent for movies and catwalks because of its injection of narcissism, from its speedy rhythms to its ironic lyrics. Humour it’s one of the key elements for overcoming the difficulties as well as boosting our own appeals and reducing our flaws.

  7. Whitesnake: Here I Go (Album: 1987, 1987)
“I don’t know where I’m going/but I sure know where I’ve been/hanging on promises/on songs of yesterday/and I’ve made up my mind/and I’m not wasting no more time/but here I go again”. We come alone to this world and most of times we have to make the hardest decisions. Knowing the way to go takes making mistakes over and over again.

  8. Irene Cara: What A Feeling! (Album: Soundtrack of Flashdance, 1983)
If Flash Dance movie it’s the story of a stripper becoming a dancer, the main song performed by Irene Cara, it’s the fight of this woman and the KO to her fears. You can never get it if you don’t try. Then, what’s lesson within? “Take your passion and make it happen”, she recommends.

  9. Sangre Azul: No Mires Atrás (Album: El silencio de la noche, 1989)
When there’s nothing that can be done, it’s time to turn the page and start again. It can be even be needed a trip for that.

  10. Peter Gabriel&Kate Bush: Don’t Give Up (Album: So, 1986)
The song starts with a feeling of defeat. “I was taught to fight/ taught to win/ I never thought I could fail (…)/ No one wants you when you lose”. Still, afterwards listens to an inner voice that recommends him not to give up and that thing will get better.

The Meaningful beauty of Cindy Crawford or aging with style

Top model and author of successful workout videos in the 80s-90s, Cindy Crawford represented the American Dream. She was the one every woman envied and that every man wanted in his bed. Now in her forties, she bottles her magic with the help of Dr Jean Louis Sebagh through her skincare line, Meaningful Beauty.

A reality that every model has to face it’s when the cosmetic brands drop them because they don’t look twenty anymore though they are promoting a product for female in their forties. Lately another trend it’s imposing, to use an icon in cinema, delete with photoshop the wrinkles that Mr Surgeon didn’t do yet and swear by God that youthness was due to the cream.

To show their own standards many celebrities have created their own brands, to choose their own models and to translate to reality the treatments of their favourite beauticians. Crawford’s travel began in 1999, the web of the brand tells, when in Paris she met Dr Sebagh, worried by the fact that the drawbacks of her job were beginning to damage her skin. Becoming a mother, it got increasingly difficult to her to travel so frequently, so she asked the doctor to bottle the formulas. Because “beauty shouldn’t cost a fortune”, in own Cindy’s words, she joined Guthy-Renker group. Meaningful Beauty, the age maintenance line, was born.

And which are the focus of these products? Cleansing, protecting, repairing, revitalizing, purifying and conditioning with antioxidants, botanicals, proteins, and vitamins, for forever young eyes, face, and neck. Try the full range with the 30-Day Kit for less than $30.

Salon at home

If centuries ago queens and royalty dictated the trends, now hairdresser’s have become most important than the celebrities they work for. Taking off in the 70s, new decade encourages their stardom, and makes available at your home the treatments you enjoy at salon.

Marie-Antoinette was famous for her outlandish hairdos and Mozart was so obsessed with the wigs to say that he needed more than one head to wear them all. In the 18 th century excess was the style code until French Revolution and started chopping heads.

The complicated hairdos, in a time that women wore a extremely long hair, required assistance and as they were to keep in the height of the fashion and eclipse other women, they had to look their best. The visit to the hairdresser was as important as the one to the taylor.

In 20 th century, with the development of cinema, actresses began to set trends, from the hair like men of the 20s to the waves of the 40s and the fully developed middle class started demanding their stylists.

If Vidal Sassoon was the man for United States, Llongueras and Ruppert were the saviours in Spain; in the 80s Ruppert was the star of a very successful advertisement in which celebrities told “Ruppert, I need you”. In 2001 Llongueras wrote his autobiography, Llongueras tal cual (Planeta), telling his most memorable moments: from talking to Dali to singing with Carreras.

Nowadays, the stylists of Madonna and Natalie Portman, for mentioning a few, recreate their looks for prestigious magazines and create their own styling lines, from everything to shampoos to colouring.

It’s a dog’s world

Having a pet it’s more than playing with an amusing plush, it’s about enduring and knowing unconditional love.

Thousands of pets are abandoned each year and the lucky ones are adopted. Other thousands are bought in pet shops and raised in homes as another member of the family.

As children, they can be obstinate sometimes, but they are unbelievably thankful and loveable, always welcoming you warmly; a little affection it’s always returned endlessly. Walking and playing can keep you fit and give you the time of your life. They’re really smart and adventurous, and loyal over all. They comfort when you are sad, keep by your side when you are ill, and warn you when they notice something strange. And they are always funny and surprising.

Companion for an average of 14 years, they can teach you things you would have never expected, and certainly improve your quality of life. In exchange you just got to walk them, feed them, and keep them clean.

Perfume: Scarlett by Cacharel

If in 1987 the release of Loulou caused a stir, Scarlett has the charme to become another classic. Don’t be fooled by its vintage design, there’s more bite than meets the eye.Famous for its mysterious women, with the allure of 20s, 30s, and 40s, Cacharel chooses an indie cover of the classic Close To Me of The Cure, to introduce this new woman played by Skye Stracke. If with Loulou they just called her and she replied “oui, c’est moi” (“yes, it’s me”), they prefer to keep the secret with Scarlett; when the man asks “Scarlett, who are you?”, she remains silent, the only answer it’s the logo “the secret lays within”. A secret of powdery stylesque tones, of a naughty Lolita that reminds Liv Tyler, smelling to a blend of jasmine, tea, honey, sandal, poire, and honeysuckle.

On the other hand, we find one of the most beautiful containers seen in a while, a top with impressed flowers, a precious sculpture to keep on everybody’s sight.

The range starts with cologne in sizes 35 ml, 50 ml, and 80 ml, and completes with a deodorant (150 ml) and a body cream (200 ml).

Barefoot

Feet support the weight of the whole body and, still, are the most forgotten area. After a long working day, spoiling them can make the difference.

Hidden, we notice them barely but when spring comes and we start wearing sandals, then we come across the disaster, feet that seem eager to play a horror film, dry and rough. To keep them like a baby takes some nice and easy pampering every day.

Doubtless, heels make look fabulous, optically enlargening our legs and making us look better proportioned, but they are harmful mostly if they are over 5 cm and stilettos. Not for free, they are the cause of several low labor and in United Kingdom, according to The Telegraph newspaper, in late September it’s been debated to banned them at work, as the wearers could suffer of “short-term health problems or longer terms injuries to their knees”, Lorraine Jones, of the Society of Chiropodists and Podiatrists says. So, whenever possible avoid them and remember that very flat shoes are as harmful for your health.

If you work standing, use compression stockings for improving your blood circulation and if you use safety footwear, use socks off that would make your feet feel more comfortable.

At home, use a massage roller for feet. It’s made of interconnected rollers that will relax your sole after walking over them. Then you can go for a bath or if you need an extra, a spa (Scholl Party Feet Foot Spa or Ufesa Foot Spa Aqua Plus Relax). Pour bath salt (The Body Shop Peppermint Reviving Foot Soak), and enjoy for a few minutes. Next, clean with the appropriate washer, dry your feet, and apply a cream to soften them, better with lavender or mint in its formulation (Yves Rocher Lavande Essentielle High Comfort Foot Cream or Lush Fair Trade Foot Lotion).

Weekly, you can go for a pedicure, with a scrub (The Body Shop Peppermint Soothing Scrub) and a mask (Yves Rocher Lavande Essentielle 3-minute Restorative Mask Sore Feet or The Body Shop Peppermint Purifying Foot Mask), and sleep with moisturising socks (Bliss Softening Socks). When partying, don’t forget in your bag the plasters (Compeed Blister Hydrocolloid Plasters) and cold spray (Boots Botanics Cooling Foot and Leg Spray or Scholl Party Feet Cool&Refresh Spray).

A walk in the nature

Since Antique times human being has wondered about the sense of life and how to achieve lasting happiness. With evolution, societies became more complex, still, are simple things that bring the greatest pleasure. Contemplating the view without expectations can be a nice way of disconnecting from the stressing common life.

We are bombed with million of advertisements that not approached with common sense can make our life miserable. If we are to believe them, we are the worst of the worst without all those products. Then, why most of those models don’t use them or are retouched in a devilish way (losing wrinkles and kilos, enlargening their legs, and improving their teeth and scalps, for mention a few)? Present day that religion has lost most of their inductive and making feel guilty power, we have promotion, and sinners are those who decide to live smartly, without the compulsive brandholism of characters like those portrayed in the books of Brett Easton-Ellis.

Is that only rich and beautiful can be happy? And if so, are they always happy? Yellow press tends to shows they can suffer as everyone else. And at once, people that seem to have lost it all, show overjoyed. What’s the secret for happiness? Making the most of ourselves, being indulgent, and appreciating small things.

Every person it’s unique and, at once, needs to belong to a group, and sometimes the group pushes so hard as to make the individuals quit their real being to fit and this resignation causes grief and frustration. If there were not rebels –those who would reclaim their right to be themselves-, society would be made of toneless mass produced members, as those suggested in 1984 and A Brave New World.

“Be free or die”, said Camille Desmoulins. In times of French Revolution, intellectuals differed about human kind being evil by nature or corrupted by society, and those who preferred to be free (Rousseau) than rich. That was the time when many rich families had properties in the countryside to play the return to nature, the symbol of perfect happiness. But that was an idealized attempt.

Life, in its complexities, it’s beautiful, because they lead to love the simple. As it was suggested in the film American Beauty, the beauty it’s in a bag rocked by the wind. Happiness lays in contemplating the dusk. Happiness lies in contemplating ducks swimming in the river and feeding their breeding. Happiness lays in smelling fig trees and apple trees, in collecting blackberries. Happiness lies in walking barefoot in the sand. Happiness lays in hearing the tweet of the birds. Happiness lies in return to the essence of life.
